The Grove
During the day, with people lingering over leisurely coffees on the
patio, there is a quiet bohemian air and Mediterranean feel to The Grove.
On a very busy Friday night, however, we were greeted with a lively gastro
pub atmosphere of loud conversation, music and laughter.
We were seated in a middle of what would be a spacious dining area were
it not for the sheer number of tables (the staff displayed excellent contortionist
skills to negotiate the room). A modern, Mediterranean style menu is created
daily and organic ingredients used wherever possible (there's even a good
selection of organic wines). For starters we chose moules mariniere
and chargrilled king prawns; both were fresh and full of flavour - so much
so that we were prepared to forgive a slightly salty vegetable stir fry
which accompanied the prawns. To follow we opted for pan-roasted lamb with
rosemary, crushed new patatoes, savoy cabbage and pancetta relish, and
oven baked cod fillet with mixed vegetables risotto and grilled asparagus.
Both were delicious and impeccably presented.
With friendly, attentive service, perfectly cooked food and vibrant
pub atmosphere, this is the perfect venue for a great night out with friends;
on the other hand, if you're looking for an intimate meal for two then
Friday night at The Grove may prove a little too 'full on'. Without a doubt
though the Grove is one of the best gastro pubs in London and, for the
quality of food, the prices are very reasonable. A three course meal for
two with a bottle of excellent wine will set you back around £60.
